Burton Cosponsors H.Con.Res.169- Prohibit Taxpayer-funded Abortions from Health Care Reform Package

Posted by Matt Prine on July 28, 2009

Cosponsor H.Con.Res.169

July 27, 2009

Dear Colleague:

In recent weeks, members of Congress and the American people have come to know the real facts about the administration's health care reform proposal. In its current form, H.R. 3200 will result in mandated abortion coverage in a publicly-funded health plan, when a strong majority of the American People opposes using federal dollars to support abortion. Predictably, this legislation would dramatically increase the number of abortions in the United States.

Under the new health care system proposed as part of H.R. 3200, every individual will be required to have health care coverage that meets "minimum benefit standards" established by the Obama administration. In his campaign for the presidency, President Obama said health care legislation should include expanded access to abortion. The bill as currently written, will allow the federal government to classify abortion as an "essential benefit," forcing American citizens to directly subsidize abortion with their tax dollars.

While debating this legislation in House committees, member's attempts to strike the provisions from the health care bill that forces every premium holder and taxpayer to pay for abortion have repeatedly been defeated. Unless Congress explicitly excludes abortion from mandated coverage and funding, those minimum benefits will include abortion.

Please join me in protecting the morals of our taxpayers and supporting the needed protections of the unborn by cosponsoring H.Con.Res.169,
expressing a sense of Congress that a government-defined or public option insurance plan should not be used to fund abortion and taxpayer-funds should not be used to provide abortion under a benefit package within any health reform package.

Sincerely,

S Rodney Alexander

MEMBER OF CONGRESS

Turner Constitutional Amendment

Posted by Matt Prine on June 19, 2009

Burton is signing on to this bill:

Limit the Government's ability to hold ownership in private corporations

Co-Sponsor the Preserving Capitalism in America Amendment

Dear Colleague:

The Obama Administration is exercising an unprecedented amount of control over private industry. They have fired CEO's, set compensation levels for private sector employees, and are taking control over the domestic auto industry. The Administration's increasing influence on private industry raises serious concerns about federal ownership of private enterprise.

For many years, a number of state constitutions have included a prohibition against a government's investment in private corporations, including: the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia.

Many of those constitutional provisions emanated from a number of disastrous state investments in private enterprises in the 1820s and 1830s, disasters that were further enhanced by the economic Panic of 1837.

In light of recent events, where the federal government now has ownership in the financial services sector and domestic automobile industry, the Preserving Capitalism in America Amendment would limit the federal government's ability to have an ownership interest in private corporations.
