Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, a cancer survivor, also will participate
TUCSON – U.S. Reps. Gabrielle Giffords and Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida will tour the Peter and Paula Fasseas Clinic at the Arizona Cancer Center on Saturday.
Wasserman Schultz is a leading advocate for health insurance reform in Congress. Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press” recently, she said a driving force for reform is the need “to put doctors and patients, not insurance companies, back in the driver's seat”
Wasserman Schultz will be a guest this Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
Last year, Wasserman Schultz introduced legislation that calls for a national breast cancer education campaign targeting women between 15 and 39. Before introducing that bill, she publicly discussed for the first time her fight with breast cancer.
Wasserman Schultz underwent seven major surgeries, including a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, while balancing motherhood and her duties representing Florida’s 20th Congressional District.
Wasserman Schultz is chairwoman of an influential House Appropriations Subcommittee and considered a rising star in Congress. As chief deputy whip, she also is a member of House leadership.
The tour of the center, at University Medical Center North, will be conducted by Dr. David Alberts, director of the Arizona Cancer Center.
“This is an outstanding facility and the research and treatment provided is of national significance,” Giffords said of the Cancer Center. “This is the state’s premier National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. It represents what works about our health care system.”
Media is welcome to attend the tour.
