TUCSON – U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords kicks off a busy Saturday by joining community leaders in Marana at the dedication ceremony for a much-anticipated park.
Later Saturday, Giffords will attend one of Southern Arizona’s most popular family events: the Tucson Rodeo.
In the morning, Giffords will be among the speakers when the Town of Marana dedicates The Crossroads at Silverbell Park. She will present Marana Mayor Ed Honea with a flag that will be flown at the park. At the congresswoman’s request, the flag previously flew over the U.S. Capitol in Washington.
The 48-acre park will be the fast-growing town’s largest. It has numerous multi-purpose ball fields; basketball, tennis and volleyball courts; picnic areas; a dog park and an outdoor performance area. It also includes an archaeological area where artifacts from Marana’s long and colorful past will be preserved.
In the afternoon, Giffords will meet with members of the Tucson Rodeo Parade Committee and present them with a commendation she entered in the Congressional Record marking the 85th anniversary of the parade.
The commendation details the parade’s historical roots and praises the committee’s service to the community.
Media are welcome at both events.
