Economic recovery legislation tops the agenda for the Southern Arizona lawmaker
WASHINGTON - Gabrielle Giffords will begin her second term as a member of the United States House of Representatives on Tuesday, January 6 when she and other members of the 111th Congress take the oath of office."The start of this congressional session is somber. Americans have not experienced an economy this bad for decades. Restoring the economy and preventing a depression is our greatest challenge," the Southern Arizona lawmaker said. "That means Congress must move quickly, with Democrats and Republicans working together to pass financial recovery legislation that adequately addresses the extraordinary challenges confronting our nation at this time."
In the 111th Congress, Giffords will continue serving on three committees: Armed Services, Foreign Affairs and Science and Technology. As she did throughout her first term, Giffords will continue to focus her efforts on the advancement of solar energy technology, military readiness and caring for our military men and women, and making health care affordable for all Americans.
"Southern Arizonans sent me to Washington to be their advocate - to fight for them, to find common sense solutions to their problems, and to make sure their voices are heard in the nation's Capitol," Giffords said. "I am again deeply honored by the faith they have put in me and I will not let them down."
Joining the congresswoman at Tuesday's swearing-in ceremony will be her husband, Mark Kelly, and her parents, Spencer and Gloria Giffords. The ceremony is expected to take place at about 2:30 p.m. in Washington, or about 12:30 p.m. in Arizona.
