Tucson lawmaker assumes key leadership role on Science and Technology Committee
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was appointed today to a key leadership post on the House Science and Technology Committee, one of three committees on which she serves.
Giffords accepted a request from committee Chairman Bart Gordon to serve as Vice Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Energy and Environment.
The post will allow the Tucson lawmaker to play a significant role in shaping the subcommittee's work on environmental science and U.S. energy policy. The subcommittee oversees civilian research and development programs with the Department of Energy, including renewable energy and conservation. It also has direct responsibilities in overseeing programs at the National Weather Service, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency.
“Being named vice chairwoman of such an important subcommittee two months into my first term is quite an honor,” said Giffords. “Given my deep interest in promoting renewable energy, it was an opportunity I could not pass up.”
The 18-member Subcommittee on Energy and Environment is one of five subcommittees of the Science and Technology Committee. Its chairman is Rep. Nick Lampson of Beaumont, Texas.
Recent issues before the subcommittee include the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, energy efficiency technologies, methamphetamine lab remediation, and 21st century innovation and competitiveness.
“I am committed to doing all I can to move the country toward the next generation of clean, sustainable and efficient energy technologies. I am especially looking forward to promoting solar energy in Arizona, which will benefit local businesses and the environment,” said Giffords. “Arizona can be a leader in renewable energy. Our industries can play a major role in reducing our dependence on foreign oil and addressing global warming. My position as vice chairwoman of the Energy and Environment Subcommittee will help me succeed in those efforts.”
Giffords also serves on the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees.
