Tucson lawmaker to speak at 17th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Friday will speak at a banquet honoring 120 undergraduate students from across the state who are participating in the Arizona/NASA Space Grant Consortium.
The banquet is the grand finale of the students' yearlong Space Grant Research Internships, part of a national program aimed at expanding opportunities to learn about and participate in NASA's aeronautics and space programs.
Giffords, a member of the House Science and Technology Committee, will praise the student's commitment to pursuing careers in math, science and engineering.
Established by Congress in 1988, the Arizona/NASA Space Grant Consortium involves Arizona's three state universities and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Its goal is to contribute to the nation's science enterprise by implementing research, education and public service projects.
Some of the students participating in this year's internships worked on the Phoenix Mars Mission, a University of Arizona-led mission which on May 25 will land a spacecraft on the Red Planet.
