Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. released the following statement upon the death of Congressman John P. Murtha:

"I was saddened to hear of the death of my colleague, mentor, and friend Congressman John P. Murtha of Pennsylvania. For 36 years, Congressman Murtha served as an example to his House colleagues through his steadfast commitment to his constituents. As chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, he was an outstanding leader who served our defense communities and who was dedicated to the important work of our subcommittee. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones who mourn his loss."
