Vt. Digger: "Vermont selected for federal health care project"

Vermont is one of eight states that has just been chosen to participate in a new federal health care demonstration project.

The Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services has established an "innovation center," designed to encourage states to develop new ways of delivering and paying for health care under the Affordable Care Act just passed this year.

Construction crews started working on the railroad Tuesday, thanks to $50 million in federal stimulus money to improve tracks between St. Albans and Vernon.

Railroad representatives and politicians kicked off the construction at a ceremony at the St. Albans Amtrak station, as politicians hammered a golden spike into the railroad tracks to mark the start of the work.

The Northern Border Regional Commission approved two Vermont projects for funding Wednesday.

Northern Vermont Fiber Optic Connection will receive $234,000 and the Northern Forest Canoe Trail will receive $141,150.

Vermont's federal delegation -- Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt. -- played key roles in authorization of the commission in the 2008 Farm Bill and securing $1.5 million funding.

Vermont's congressional delegation and the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Wednesday the release of $50 million in federal stimulus money for upgrades to the Amtrak passenger track from St. Albans to Vernon.

Under fire in maple syrup country, the maker of Log Cabin All Natural Syrup said Tuesday it's getting rid of the product's caramel coloring in response to complaints by producers of the real thing.
