Burlington Free Press: "Vermont rail improvements begin"

Construction crews started working on the railroad Tuesday, thanks to $50 million in federal stimulus money to improve tracks between St. Albans and Vernon.
Railroad representatives and politicians kicked off the construction at a ceremony at the St. Albans Amtrak station, as politicians hammered a golden spike into the railroad tracks to mark the start of the work.

Vermont's congressional delegation and the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Wednesday the release of $50 million in federal stimulus money for upgrades to the Amtrak passenger track from St. Albans to Vernon.

Delegation Welcomes Release of Funds for ‘Vermonter’ High-Speed Rail Project

Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) today welcomed the release of $50 million in federal stimulus funds for the "Vermonter" rail line from St. Albans to Vernon, Vt.
The high-speed rail project will be the second in the nation to break ground using funds that Congress approved in last year's economic recovery act. (Maine's "Downeaster" line was first.)
