Grant Information and Assistance

An important part of Jay’s work in Congress is to work with constituents, local leaders, and organizations to enhance communities throughout the 1st Congressional District of Washington state. One way to accomplish this is through federal grants.

Below find sources of information on funding support for individual and community projects. Many of the publications listed may be consulted at local, public or research libraries, or at one of the Foundation Center’s cooperating libraries.

1. How To Write A Grant Proposal:
This document describes major components of the written grant proposal and gives basic guidelines for developing, organizing and writing the proposal.

2. Information About Grants from the Federal Government:
This web site [ www.grants.gov ] provides information about many available federal grants, allows you to sign up for email notices about new grants in your field, and allows you to apply for many of the grants online. Currently, nine federal agencies are included: U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Education, Energy, Interior, Justice, Labor and Health and Human Services, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance, published by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), is the definitive source of information in over 1,300 grant programs administered by more than 50 Federal agencies. The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance is available in hardcopy, on CD-ROM, diskettes and online. The GSA Web site features a search engine that allows applicants to:

  1. perform a program search of all Catalog programs by using up to five "keywords" or phrases with several operators;
  2. find the keyword within a paragraph or program or within a selected range of words; and
  3. determine the number of programs and keyword occurrences found.

The Federal Register
The Federal Register publishes public regulations and legal notices issued by federal agencies, including some grant availabilities. The Federal Register is also available at most education and public libraries.

Homeland Security Grants and Training
Provides information on federal homeland security and public safety grant opportunities, whether administered by DHS or other departments and agencies. Critical state and local missions supported through these grants include the preparedness of first responders and citizens, public health, infrastructure security, and other public safety activities. Department of Homeland Security grants listed include those administered by the Office of Domestic Preparedness (ODP), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Other Federal agency programs include the Department of Health and Human Services' public health preparedness grants, Department of Justice grants for counter-terrorism and general-purpose law enforcement activities, and Environmental Protection Agency grants for enhancing the security of our nation's water supplies.

U.S. Business Advisor (Small Business Administration)
Web page intended to provide business with one-stop access to federal government information, services, and transactions. Covers business development, laws and regulations, international trade, work place issues, and buying and selling.

FirstGov for Government-to-Government (for State and Local Governments)
Thousands of grants and loans are made by the federal government to state and local governments and other public entities. This site provides one-stop access to grants management and federal assistance programs, in addition to resources about acquisition and procurement, financial management, and taxes.

FirstGov for Businesses and Nonprofits Links to federal department and agency information and services to assist nonprofit organizations.

Notices of Funding Availability (Department of Agriculture) Notices of Funding Availability are announcements that appear in the Federal Register inviting applications for federal grant programs. This page allows you to generate a customized listing of by date, by broad subject terms, or by department/agency.

The Foundation Directory
This directory is maintained by the Foundation Center; an independent, non-profit information clearinghouse established in 1956. The Center's mission is to foster public understanding of the foundation field by collecting, organizing, analyzing and disseminating information on foundations, corporate giving and related subjects.

GuideStar
GuideStar provides information on the activities and finances of more than 650,00 nonprofit organizations, the latest news on philanthropy, and resources for donors and nonprofits.

The Grantsmanship Center (TGCI)
In addition to useful links to government resources, this site includes information on community foundations and international funding.

Community Foundations (by State) are often particularly interested in local projects and maintain diverse grants programs. TGCI also offers publications, training, and workshops in proposal writing, grantsmanship, and fund raising for nonprofit organizations and government.
