Energy

The energy crisis is complicated. Its effect on families is not.

While the economic downturn has temporarily lowered fuel prices, fundamental challenges remain. When the economy revives, world demand will resume its upward trend, with India and China vastly expanding their oil imports.

Meanwhile, U.S. domestic refinery capacity has decreased due to new regulations requiring refiners to limit sulfur content and switch from the oxygenate additive MTBE to ethanol.

Our nation needs a balanced energy policy to maintain our standard of living and a growing economy. This includes policies to promote renewable and alternative sources of energy and efficient use of our resources, as well as healthy domestic oil exploration and development. All are necessary to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Please be assured I will continue to develop and support legislation to reduce energy prices, both for the short term and long term, to lessen the impact on our economy and the environment.

The following pages provide my positions on energy issues as well as background papers.
