Taunton River Receives Wild and Scenic Designation

The United States Congress and President Obama recently enacted into law legislation to support the protection and community-based management of Taunton River as part of the National Park System’s Wild & Scenic River system. I am very pleased that we have passed this important legislation recognizing the vital natural and recreational aspects of the Taunton River. I appreciate all of the hard work in support of the bill that was provided by the cities and towns along the river, and the non-profit groups and area residents that have been leading advocates for the Wild and Scenic designation.  Passage of the bill helps ensure that the river will remain a valuable resource that can be enjoyed by future generations.

“The following photographs, and the photo above, of the Taunton River were taken by Richard Benjamin. The photographs were published in the book Narragansett Bay by Richard Benjamin (Photographs) and John Torgan (Text).

Richard Benjamin has been photographing Rhode Island and the surrounding areas for most of his life; John Torgan has been Narragansett Baykeeper for most of his career. Together, they have created a powerful statement about the body of water that defines the area, including these extraordinary photos of the Taunton River, one of the bay’s several tributaries.  Please note that these photos are copyright protected and may not be used without the permission of Mr. Richard Benjamin.”
