Unusual Facts
Known as "The Florida Fire Eater" for his radical views in support of the southern cause, David Levy, was the first Jew to serve in the Senate. In compliance with a request made by his fiancee, David Levy changed his name to David Levy Yulee, by special act of the Florida general assembly on January 12, 1846.

The two Floridians honored in Statuary Hall share a link to the Smithsonian Institution, which published the Confederate General Smith's botany reports of the Mexican boundary. The Smithsonian also houses an ice making invention by tropical disease scientist Dr. Gorrie. Gorrie is considered the father of refrigeration.
