STATEMENT OF SENATOR MACK
EVERGLADES RESTORATION

Today is an important day. It is important because now -- at long last -- we have a realistic chance of restoring, preserving, and protecting for future generations a unique environmental treasure that is fractured, starved for water, and in steady decline.

This restoration matters because in the past 100 years a wonderful, pristine natural system has been systematically robbed of its beauty and uniqueness in the name of short-term human interest. The restoration matters because the America's Everglades are a national treasure, unique in the world, and deserving of a better fate than what is currently written for it in the laws of this country.

The Congress of the United States is the only remaining hurdle between this good plan, and the restoration goal shared by all of us.

I want to especially highlight the commitment of Governor Bush and the State of Florida. He has consistently demonstrated - with both words and actions - that Florida is and will remain a full partner with us in this effort. He has instructed the members of his administration to fully cooperate with us and provide valuable technical support. He has worked with our legislature in Tallahassee to set up a legal framework for the restoration effort. And he has assembled an impressive coalition of legislators and local officials to fully fund Florida's share of the cost.
