Congresswoman Chellie Pingree testified in case last month, calls decision “victory for Maine workers”
The International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled today that Chinese and Indonesian paper manufacturers have been illegally dumping coated paper on the U.S. market, unfairly competing with American paper makers. The decision mean the ITC will start imposing duties on paper imported from those countries to level the playing field for U.S. manufacturers.
Congresswoman Chellie Pingree said, “This is a huge win for worker in Maine and at paper mills around the country. We knew that China and Indonesia were not following the rules and this decision means they’ll have to pay.”
Pingree testified before the ITC in the case last month, saying Chinese subsidies artificially reduce the price of imported paper, causing layoffs at mills in the U.S. and violating international law.
“I testified because I think the U.S. government needs to crack down on countries that are subsidizing their paper mills, dumping cheap imported paper on the U.S. market and putting Americans out of work.”
