As your Representative in the U.S. Congress, I find myself traveling almost every week between my office at the U.S. Capitol, and my offices around the Sixth District – in Tacoma, Bremerton, and Port Angeles.  When I’m here in Washington State, I meet with constituents to hear about their concerns, attend community events, and check out local projects and business developments.  When I’m in the other Washington – Washington D.C. – I focus primarily on legislation.

As the Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies, my day often begins with meetings and hearings on the federal budget. It is my job to develop an annual spending bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that funds the Department of Interior, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the United States Forest Service.  Our National Parks, Forests, and Tribal lands are all within the jurisdiction of my Subcommittee, and I work to ensure that our Federal land management and environmental conservation agencies receive the funds they need to preserve our natural resources.

In addition, I am also the Vice-Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.  In this role I attend frequent hearings with the defense community, assist the Chairman in analyzing and forming the budget for the Department of Defense, and vote on critical issues related to national security.  At a time when our nation’s military is deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, I am especially aware of the importance of approaching national security issues on a serious, non-partisan and constructive basis, and I will continue to do so.

My most important role in Congress is working for my constituents.  In addition to meeting with folks from around the Sixth District to listen to their views on health care, Social Security, veterans’ issues, labor and many other issues, my staff is able to assist constituents in other ways.  Whether you are having trouble dealing with a Federal agency, or you just want to arrange a tour of the White House, my staff can help.
