CHARLESTON GATE RECONFIGURATION
ADDED TO MILITARY CONSTRUCTION BILL

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The House Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittee approved a $6.15 million addition to the Obama Administration’s budget request in order to fund a major improvement in traffic and security at the Charleston Gate entrance to Naval Base Kitsap, U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks said Wednesday.

The project will involve the construction of a special truck lane and a more permanent security facility at the busy entrance to the base, the congressman said.

Rep. Dicks had asked the panel to include the appropriation this year even though it was scheduled for a future fiscal year, contending the traffic conditions in the area and valid security concerns merited the acceleration of the work.

The Subcommittee also approved the remainder of the $309.8 million that had been originally requested in the Obama Administration budget sent to Congress in February, including continued construction at Fort Lewis associated with the additional Stryker Brigades and the completion of a large weapons storage complex at Submarine Base Bangor.  The complete listing of projects recommended for the upcoming fiscal year, beginning October 1, 2010, is as follows:
