Guard, Reserve personnel get important new protections in Defense Bill passed by House

Provision written by Congresswoman Chellie Pingree requires benefits counseling

Today the House passed the National Defense Authorization Act, which included a provision written by Congresswoman Chellie Pingree that will require retiring National Guard and Reserve personnel to get a full explanation of benefits--like VA health care and Tricare—when they leave the service.

Supporting measure on House floor

“We owe retiring Guard and Reserve personnel a full explanation of the benefits they have earned,” Pingree said.  “My proposal would guarantee they get it and I’m glad to see it included as part of this major defense bill.”

The Senate still has to pass a Defense Authorization Bill.
