Congresswoman Chellie Pingree votes to stop Congressional pay raise

Says now is no time for Congress to get a raise

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree voted today to block a pay raise for Members of Congress.  The bill, which Congresswoman Pingree co-sponsored, stops a cost of living pay increase that would have taken effect automatically.

“These are tough economic times and families all over Maine have had to cut back and make sacrifices,” Pingree said. “This is not time for Congress to be getting a raise.”

The bill passed the House this afternoon and since an identical bill passed the Senate last week, the measure now goes to the President for his signature.

“We need to focus on saving and creating jobs and getting people back to work,” Pingree said.  “Not giving ourselves a pay raise.”
