School lunch and nutrition subject of discussion in Buxton

Mainers can submit questions about child nutrition online for Congresswoman Chellie Pingree and Obama Administration official

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree is holding a child nutrition roundtable next week to discuss issues related to school lunches. With her will be Under Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Concannon.  Concannon, former Commissioner of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, will talk about the Obama Administration’s efforts to reform school lunch programs.  First Lady Michelle Obama has made improving the Child Nutrition Act a top priority.

The meeting will take place next Tuesday, June 1st,  from 9:00 am to 10:30 am at Bonny Eagle Middle School.  Pingree has invited a number of nutritionists, educators, parents and others to participate in the discussion.  The discussion will be streamed online and people can submit questions through Pingree’s website at www.pingree.house.gov.

“We’ve already received hundreds of questions through our website,” Pingree said.  “Obviously this is an issue that is important to many people here in Maine.”

The Child Nutrition Re-authorization Act -- which is responsible for school lunches and many other important programs -- will be coming up for a vote in Congress this year. This program started in 1966 and has played a vital role in helping to make sure all children are fed and healthy.
