Congresswoman Chellie Pingree talks to Navy Secretary about Brunswick-area commissary

Tells Secretary Ray Mabus commissary services critical for active and retired military personnel

In a meeting with Navy Secretary Ray Mabus yesterday, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree once again made the case to keep commissary and exchange services in the Brunswick area after the Brunswick Naval Air Station closes.

Pingree has disagreed with a Navy report that indicated a continued commissary presence isn’t justified.

“The number of active duty and retired personnel that will remain in the area justifies a commissary,” Pingree said.  “And I made that clear to Secretary Mabus.”

Pingree says that continued access to commissary and exchange services is something that both active duty and retired military personnel deserve.

“Being able to shop at a commissary isn’t a privilege, it’s a right that those who serve and have served in the military have earned,” Pingree said.  “We owe it to them.”
