Funding will improve traffic signals in city, create Bayside trail
Congresswoman Chellie Pingree has secured funding for two important transportation projects in Portland in the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Bill . A total of $1 million will go toward improving traffic flow through the city and help transform a railroad corridor into a 1.2 mile greenway.
The bill includes $800,000 for Pingree’s request to fund the first phase of a regional traffic management system. The system improves communication and vehicle detection between intersections. By knowing where vehicles are, the system will synchronize traffic signals to minimizes instances where vehicles must come to a complete stop while improving safety for vehicles and pedestrians alike.
“Anyone who has driven through Portland knows how frustrating the traffic lights can be,” Pingree said. “This investment will improves traffic flow, reduce congestion and avoid more costly solutions like road widening, adding lanes, and intersection reconstruction. It’s a smart, money-saving project improving traffic flow at minimal cost.”
The bill also includes $200,000 to fund the Bayside Promenade Project. This project will transform a railroad corridor into a 1.2-mile greenway, providing pedestrian-friendly access to retail, office, and residential amenities. The trail will form a “spine” of green through the city, linking the Eastern Promenade and Back Cove Trails.
“This trail will provide safe pedestrian access for students at nearby schools, offer a focal point for cultural activities and community programs, contribute to the economic vitality of the city, and improve the city’s quality of life,” Pingree said.
