Working Families

I understand the challenges our working families face on a daily basis.

Tennessee has a talented workforce and I will support measures that further develops opportunities for economic prosperity for all hard-working Tennessee families. Some of the ways I have supported our hard working families has been by voting for an increase in the federal minimum wage and by continuously pushing legislation allowing Tennesseans to deduct sales tax from their federal income tax, both of which have become law. Always mindful of the honor and trust bestowed to me, another way, perhaps most importantly, I have supported our working families is by being as accessible and responsive as possible.

Part of understanding the challenges our rural working families face means not rewarding the Wall Street banks who helped place us in the economic crisis we have been battling.

On September 29, 2008, the legislative vehicle for the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act (Wall Street Bank Bailout) failed in the House of Representatives by a vote of 205-228, with 1 not voting. I voted No on this legislation.

On October 3, 2008, the House of Representatives approved the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act (Wall Street Bank Bailout) by a vote of 263-171. Again, I voted NO on this legislation.
