High school students seeking nomination to service academies encouraged to attend
TUCSON – U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday, May 2 hosts her third Academy Day, an information session for high school students seeking nomination to a U.S. service academy.
Students and parents will have the opportunity to meet with the congresswoman and representatives of the academic institutions charged with training the next generation of military officers.
Every member of Congress has the privilege of nominating a select few for admission to our country’s prestigious service academies, which provide undergraduate education for commissioned officers in the United States armed forces.
Interested students must apply for nomination in the congressional district where they reside. If the applicant meets the high standards required by the academies, he or she will be offered an interview with the congresswoman’s Academy Nominating Committee.
Giffords, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, nominates candidates to each academy, but the academies make the final decision.
Attending Academy Day will be representatives from the Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, Military and Naval academies, as well as the University of Arizona ROTC.
