Stimulus funds will improve access to health care in Tucson, Green Valley, Marana, Elfrida and Nogales
WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords today announced that five community health centers in Southern Arizona will receive $2.25 million in federal economic recovery funds to expand services.
Health centers in Tucson, Green Valley, Marana, Elfrida, and Nogales are among 1,128 federally qualified facilities across the United States that will share $338 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
In Arizona, 16 community health centers in 13 communities will share $5.63 million.
Nationally, the federal funds will be used over the next two years to create or retain approximately 6,400 health center jobs and allow the centers to provide care to an additional 2.1 million patients, including about 1 million who are uninsured.
Recent estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that almost 1.3 million Arizonans lack any form of health insurance.
The health centers receiving the funds deliver primary and preventive care to patients regardless of their ability to pay. Charges for services are set according to income. In 2007, America’s health centers served more than 16 million patients, about 40 percent of whom had no health insurance.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was approved by Congress and signed into law by President Obama last month. Below is a list of all the Arizona community health centers that will receive finding from the act. The Southern Arizona facilities are in bold.
