Tucson lawmaker's busy week also includes speeches to a retirement community in Oro Valley, the Arizona Manufacturers Council, U.S. Green Building Council, and the Pima County Public Library Space Camp
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Monday will host a briefing on energy policy with experts from the University of Arizona, the oil industry and former Interior Secretary Stewart Udall.
The two-hour briefing, Energy Crisis Myths and Realities: Working Toward Common Sense Solutions, begins at noon in the Gould-Simpson Building on the University of Arizona Campus.
The energy crisis confronting our country is one of the most serious in history. Gasoline prices are at record levels, the world's demand for petroleum is growing and there are serious concerns about our ability to meet future energy needs. Now more than ever, America needs a national energy policy.
To achieve this goal, the congresswoman believes we first must separate energy myths from the realities. This is the reason for Monday's briefing. Joining her in the discussion will be experts who will help us get beyond the rhetoric that has dominated so much recent discussion on energy issues.
The participants are:
- Matt Simmons, author of Twilight in the Desert and a leading peak oil expert;
- Dr. Joaquin Ruiz, Dean of the University of Arizona's College of Science and a professor of geochemistry;
- Paul Portney, Dean of UA's Eller College of Management;
- Reginal Spiller, Vice President, Frontera Resources and former Deputy Assistant Secretary in the U.S. Department of Energy;
- Dr. Wes Ward, Former Western Regional Geologist, U.S. Geological Survey; and
- Stewart Udall, a former Secretary of the Interior and member of Congress from southern Arizona.
Earlier Monday, the congresswoman will visit the Mountain View Retirement Village in Oro Valley to kick off a lecture series emphasizing the importance of "being green."
Later in the week, she will participate in a roundtable discussion about the economy with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage and speak to the Arizona Manufacturers Council 2008 Environmental Summit, the U.S. Green Building Council and the Pima County Public Library Space Camp.
