Legislation aimed at promoting drug safety, economic development
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Friday will visit Tucson’s Peter and Paula Fasseas Cancer Clinic at the Arizona Cancer Center at UMC North to announce the signing into law of her first bill.
The Tucson lawmaker’s The Safe and Effective Drug Development Act of 2007 was signed into law today by President Bush as part of the Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007. The signing comes 267 days after Giffords took the oath of office as a member of 110th Congress.
Giffords’ bill passed the House of Representatives on July 11 with strong bipartisan support. It authorizes the Food and Drug Administration to form collaborative partnerships with universities and non-profit organizations to improve the process for the testing of medical products. These improvements are needed so that patients can receive new, potentially life-saving drugs more quickly and with greater assurance of their safety.
Tucson’s Critical Path Institute is an example of a public-private FDA partnership that will now have an opportunity to greatly expand its work on drug safety under the new legislation. Dr. Raymond Woosley, the institute’s president and CEO, will join the congresswoman at the Cancer Clinic.
Also participating will be Dr. David Alberts, the director of the Arizona Cancer Center, and Gregory Pivirotto, president and CEO of University Medical Center.
