DC Tour Request

If you are planning a visit to Washington, my office can provide House and Senate passes and can send you helpful information on what to see. If you contact me in advance, I can also arrange, on a limited basis, the Capitol, the State Department, the White House, and the FBI. Please notify me at least two months prior to your visit so I can arrange the tour you want. Please send your requests to my office at 2336 Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, DC, 20515. Request Online.

The White House, unfortunately, is only available for organized groups of 10 or more people. Requests are accepted up to six months in advance. If a tour is not available, there is a White House Visitor Center open daily from 7:30 AM until 4 PM, except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. At the Visitor Center there are exhibits, an information and sales area, and special programs such as park ranger talks and military concerts. At 1450 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, the Visitor Center is located close to the White House itself, and you may walk down Pennsylvania Avenue to take a closer look. The closest Metro station is Federal Triangle on the Blue and Orange line. For additional information please visit
www.whitehouse.gov/history/tours/

The Capitol is open for guided tours from 9 AM until 4:30 PM, Monday through Saturday, including all federal holidays except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Visitors must obtain free timed tickets on a first-come first-serve basis at the South-West Screening Facility located on Independence Avenue and First Street SW, next to the Botanic Garden Conservatory. Tickets are available starting at 8:15 AM, and are claimed quickly. All persons who wish to enter the Capitol must wait in line at that time. The nearest Metro station is Capitol South, located on the Orange and Blue line. Visit http://www.aoc.gov/ for more information.

The Supreme Court building is open from 9 AM until 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, except federal holidays. Every weekday when the court is not in session, public lectures occur in the Courtroom on a first-come first-serve basis at 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30. There is a 24-minute visitors' film, and various exhibits. Beginning the first Monday in October and lasting through April, the Court hears up to four one-hour arguments a day, Monday through Wednesday, beginning at 10 AM and lasting until 2 or 3 PM, with a one-hour lunch break. From late April until the end of June, the Court takes the Bench for 30 minutes on Mondays at 10 AM for the release of orders and opinions. The Supreme Court is located at One First Street, NE, just north of the Capitol and just west of the Library of Congress Jefferson building. There is no cost for these tickets, but they do run out early. If you wish, for a fee you may call the National Park Reservation System at 1-800-967-2283 or surf to http://reservations.nps.gov and make reservations ahead of time. There is a $1.50 service fee per ticket, plus a $0.50 handling fee per order. The nearest Metro station is Smithsonian on the Orange and Blue line.

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (a.k.a. the US Mint) is open for public tours from 9 AM until 2 PM and 5 PM until 7 PM between May 6 and August 30, except weekends and federal holidays. For the rest of the year, tour hours are from 9 AM until 2 PM, except weekends and federal holidays. Tickets are required for all tours, and are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors must present a valid photo ID at the ticket booth located on Raoul Wallenberg Place (formerly 15th street), on the same day that the ticket is requested. The booth opens at 8 AM. There is, however, a Visitor's Center that does not require tickets. Between May 6 and August 30 the Visitor's Center is open from 8:30 AM until 8 PM; the remainder of the year it is open from 9 AM until 3:30 PM. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing is located at the corner of 14th and C Streets, SW, with the closest Metro stop being Smithsonian station on the Orange and Blue lines. Please be aware that visitors are not permitted to bring to most facilities aerosol and non-aerosol sprays; cans and bottles; food and beverages; oversized suitcases, duffel bags and oversized backpacks; knives of any length; razors and box cutters; mace and pepper spray. Cameras are usually permitted, and a Photo ID card may be helpful.

There are several ways to get around Washington. One way is the Metro, DC's subway system. An all day pass is only a couple of dollars, and it will safely take you most places you may wish to visit. You may also wish to drive to these sites, although parking in most areas of Washington is limited and the streets are often confusing. Taxis operate under a rather obscure zone system. For more information visit http://dcpages.ari.net/Travel/Reviews/taxi.shtml. There are also various tour bus services that hit many of the major sites. Tourmobile, for example, for a fee, will transport you to 25 major sites. Call 888.868.7707 or visit www.tourmobile.com for more information.

This information is only a starting point. For more information about the Washington DC area, visit the Washington Convention and Tourism Corporation's web site at http://washington.org/, or pick up one of the widely available Washington tour guidebooks.
