TUCSON - U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will present information at four forums next week on The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, emergency legislation aimed at revitalizing our economy by cutting taxes, creating jobs and investing in innovation, energy and education to lay the groundwork for long-term growth.
President Barack Obama is expected to sign the $789 billion bill into law as soon as it is passed by the House of Representatives and Senate. Both bodies are scheduled to vote on the measure today.
More than 530 people from across Arizona will be attending the forums, which will focus on key aspects of the recovery legislation. Attendees include business and community leaders, as well as social service providers, health care professionals and educators.
At each 90-minute forum, Giffords will provide an overview of how the bill will help Arizonans as they struggle to cope with the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. It is estimated that The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will create or save 3.5 million jobs nationally over the next two years. Approximately 70,000 of those jobs will be in Arizona.
The first two forums, at the University of Arizona in Tucson and Arizona State University in Tempe, will focus science, technology and renewable energy funding. The third will focus on business and infrastructure investments and the fourth on assistance to states for education and health and human services.
At Tuesday's forum at ASU, Giffords will be joined by her colleague from Arizona's 5th Congressional District, U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell. Media is welcome at each forum.
