Bike lanes open on St. Georges Bridge (WDEL)

Wilmington | August 26, 2010 - New bikes lanes open on the St. Georges Bridge over the C & D Canal.

Biking enthusiasts have wanted this for 20 years.

"I enjoyed being one of the first people to cross the bridge."

Avid cyclists Senator Tom Carper, Congressman Mike Castle, and Governor Jack Markell joined dozens of bikers on the two-and-a-half mile trek over the St. Georges Bridge and back. Markell says the benefits to biking are endless.

"It's great for exercise. It's great in keeping us fit. It's great for the environment. It's good for our health. It's good for our pocketbooks, and we hope a lot of people take advantage of it."

Jay Kistler of the University of Delaware's cycling team says he felt safe and he'd definitely take this route again.

"It was good that they were clearly divided from where the cars are - so it's safe and comfortable. We definitely ride down to southern Delaware sometimes, so we'll definitely go this way."

State Rep. Valerie Longhurst of Bear has a date with her bike, Trek, every Sunday. She says the Thursday afternoon ride in the sun felt great.

"Oh, the wind felt great! It was like you were free. It was like you were flying on the way down, it was awesome!"

The new bike lanes have reduced traffic to one lane each way on the St. Georges Bridge.
