Republicans defeated the Democrats 11-10 to take home the coveted Roll Call Trophy for the eighth consecutive year. Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) wore the #11 Shorter College uniform. The game was back and forth early, with the score notched at four apiece as Republicans came to bat in the bottom of the sixth. Rep. Gingrey stepped in as a pinch hitter and reached first base on a fielder’s choice to keep the rally alive. His run would eventually score as the Republicans tacked on four runs in the sixth to take a large lead into the seventh and final inning. The Dems battled back in the 7th, scoring six runs, but could not fend off late inning heroics from the GOP in their final at bat. During the tour, Phil examined the high-tech camera, lighting and sensor systems being used to create a “virtual fence” of surveillance along the border. National Guardsmen on the border - Phil meets with Sgt. Jennings, a member of the U.S. National Guard. Guard units are assisting along the border by building roads, fences and other infrastructure needed to prevent illegal immigration. BORTAC facility: El Paso, Texas - BORTAC is the Border Patrol's specially trained tactical unit, and at the BORTAC facility in Texas, the “best of the best” are trained to defend our border. At the BORTAC training center, Phil takes a look at some of the weapons used by this tactical unit. Bricks for border security: from Georgia to Mexico - This spring, many of Phil’s constituents mailed him bricks as a symbol that we need a better border fence to keep out illegal immigrants and secure our homeland. Phil brought one of these bricks with him to the border, and showed it to various officials to let them know the people of Georgia want a secure border. Here, Phil places the brick at the international boundary between the U.S. and Mexico. Border Patrol helicopter - Phil examines one of the helicopters used for aerial surveillance of the border. Border fence ladder - Phil climbs a make-shift ladder found on a California section of the border fence. Illegal immigrants are using ladders to climb over the fence and gain entry into the U.S. Updated technologies – like infrared and heat-seeking cameras – will help combat this occurrence. Drug smuggling pack - Phil tries on one of the packs used by illegal immigrants to smuggler marijuana into the U.S. This pack was seized at a crossing near Nogales, Arizona. Night tour of New Mexico border - On a night tour of the border in New Mexico, Phil examines vehicle barriers constructed by our National Guardsmen. This fencing is intended to prevent smugglers from driving across the border and “dumping” illegal immigrants in the New Mexican dessert. Unlike border locations with close proximity to cities, the Border Patrol in this part of New Mexico have approximately three days to track and capture illegal immigrants as they trek through the desert to the closest city. New Mexico Border - Phil and Congressman Tom Price view the New Mexico/ Mexico border and are briefed on patrolling the vast desert area. Criminal deportation - Phil examines the process used – including bus transport – to deport illegal immigrants with criminal records back to Mexico or their countries of origin. “Smugglers Gulch” in California - Phil visits “Smugglers Gulch”, a drainage area notorious for illegal immigrant crossings. The U.S. Border Patrol is working to fill in the area with earth moved from the mountains behind the gulch in an effort to deter crossing at this point. Arizona truck check-point - At the Nogales, Arizona truck check-point, a Customs and Border Protection agent explains to Phil how drugs are smuggled into the U.S. using Mexican agricultural trucks. Illegal IDs and documents - At a point of entry facility Nogales, Arizona, Phil looks at some of the illegal documents seized from individuals trying to come into America. Drug smuggler’s car - Phil gets a close look at a secret compartment in a car used to smuggle drugs across the border.
