Tomorrow, Gus will present the Distinguished Flying Cross to former Safety Harbor City Commission member and WWII veteran airman George Costage.

Painting Honoring the Distinguished Flying Cross The Suncoast News has more on this event...

A local man who fought in aerial battles against the Nazi's six decades ago will finally get the honor he deserves.

From August 1944 until March 1945, George Costage flew on 35 combat missions as a gunner aboard a B-24 bomber over European countries occupied by Nazi Germany.

Upon learning of Costage's experience, U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Palm Harbor, worked to have the former Air Force sergeant's service record corrected to reflect his participation in aerial combat during World War II.

Costage will receive the Distinguished Flying Cross at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, during a meeting of the Briar Creek Homeowner's Association.

In a press release, Gus made the following statement regarding Costage's award...

"The bravery and courage exhibited by Sergeant Costage in each of these successful missions played an important role in the liberation of millions and ultimately the defeat of Nazi Germany...Under very trying and life threatening conditions, Sergeant Costage demonstrated his skill and outstanding proficiency in aerial combat. I am honored to have the opportunity to help recognize this local hero for his heroism and courage during World War II."
