Susan and Vets

Veterans

The veterans' community in the San Diego region is very large and active.  More than 60,000 former service members live in California’s 53rd Congressional District alone.  As Chairwoman of the Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel, Susan cares about service members during active duty and when they leave the military and become veterans.  Susan has supported efforts to block increases in copayments for TRICARE and has supported significant increases in funding for veterans’ health care.  Susan is also working to address the unique mental health challenges facing service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and to ensure a healthy transition back to civilian life for them.

In the 110th Congress, Susan introduced the Home Ownership for America’s Veterans Act (H.R. 551) to improve California’s CalVet home loan program.  H.R. 551 was added to a larger veterans’ benefit package and signed into law – finally opening up the CalVet home loan program to newly discharged veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.   As a strong advocate for the Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD), Susan secured federal funding to help VVSD expand and renovate its facilities for veterans beating addictions.  She also added provisions to the Higher Education Act to help reservists defer student loan payments and reenter college after activation.  In the 111th Congress, Susan will continue to advocate for veterans and work to fulfill the debt owed to them in return for their sacrifices.
