On the Issues
As a member of the Congressional Friends of Animals Caucus, Susan has supported legislation to protect both wild and domestic animals from cruelty and abuse.
Animal Rights Press Releases:
- Susan Davis Named "Humane Advocate" for Her Work to Protect Animals
- Susan Davis Supports Crack Down on Dog Fighting
- Susan Davis Votes to Protect Polar Bears
- Rep. Susan Davis Votes To Protect Wild Horses
Legislation Susan is pursuing in the 111th Congress:
H.Res.191, a resolution to designate a month in 2009 as National Link Awareness Month. This legislation would serve to increase awareness about the link between animal cruelty and other forms of violence in society.
On a related note, Susan signed a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, asking that data be collected on animal cruelty crimes, and for that data to be made available to the public. Since animal cruelty is linked to other types of violence in society, the collection and compilation of this data would create a valuable law enforcement and prevention tool.
Susan is also pursuing a resolution to recognize the contribution zoo keepers make to the care and conservation of captive exotic animals and to research, public education, and recreation.
Legislation Susan has cosponsored in the 111th Congress:
Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (H.R. 503), legislation to stop the slaughter of horses for human consumption.
Truth in Fur Labeling Act (H.R. 2480), legislation to eliminate exemption requirements for products containing relatively small amounts of fur, and permit states to enforce more restrictive fur labeling requirements.
La Jolla Seals
During much of the year, seals and sea lions are present on a small stretch of beach in La Jolla called the Children’s Pool. However, there has been ongoing disagreement about whether the seals should be able to remain. Susan is closely following the issue.
