I'm excited tonight to be joining Newt Gingrich and his wife, Callista, as the Congressional sponsor of the premiere of their documentary "Rediscovering God in America II: Our Heritage." The film explores the role of religion in early America and the role it continues to play in our liberty, prosperity, and survival as an exceptional nation.

There is no better backdrop for the film to be showcased than in the new Capitol Visitor Center, where I, along with other Members of the Congressional Prayer Caucus have worked over the past year to correct historical inaccuracies throughout the center, particularly in regards to our nation's religious heritage. We were successful in passing legislation to have the words "In God We Trust" and the Pledge of Allegiance engraved into the center.

Every year, thousands of Americans fill our nation’s museums and historical sites eager to learn about American history and to understand where we’ve been and where we are going as a nation. They expect to be presented with historically accurate representations of documents, buildings, and artifacts. There has been a growing effort to reinterpret American history at the expense of our religious heritage. But the historical significance of religion in our nation is too important to the formation, growth, and protection of our country to allow it to be torn down.

We owe it to those who have gone before us and to our future generations to provide a complete representation of our nation’s heritage. Films like Newt’s “Rediscovering God in America II: Our Heritage” are a way to help us remember that important part of our history.

In case you missed it, I spoke on the House Floor on Tuesday on a case in Florida which could lead to the criminalization of prayer in America.

Today, the Freedom From Religion Foundation filed a lawsuit to prevent the engraving of “In God We Trust” and Pledge of Allegiance from the Capitol complex. The lawsuit sheds light on the lengths that a small minority will take to remove our nation’s faith history from this generation and future generations of Americans.  I, along with many Members of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, intend to fight this unabashed and dangerous effort to silence our nation’s history.  Truly even our Pledge of Allegiance and our national motto are not spared from these efforts. Our Declaration of Independence states that our rights are “endowed by our Creator."

If the plaintiffs in this lawsuit are successful, they will succeed not only in removing the history for which our fathers and founders sacrificed so much, but also in removing the very source our Founders believed provided our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
