Congress has approved a bill to let three-wheeled vehicle manufacturers like Aptera qualify for Department of Energy funding, according to AutoblogGreen. That means the bill will soon hit President Obama's desk, where he is expected to sign the order.

"This is a huge win for scientific innovation and the environment," said Rep. Brian Bilbray, a Republican from California that also co-sponsored the bill, in the report. "We need more innovation and less regulation when it comes to promoting new ways to save energy while saving money at the pump.

The DOE will still approve loan requests on a case by case basis, and there are inherent safety concerns with three-wheeled designs, the report said.
