Price Statement on Continuing Resolution

Today, House Democrats plan to consider a short-term spending bill, known as a “continuing resolution,” to keep the federal government running from October 1 through December 3, 2010. The deadline of December 3 admits that the Democrat leadership is interested in holding a Lame Duck session after the election. Congressman Chairman Tom Price (R-GA) issued the following statement in response.

“Democrats spent ages trying to pass an unpopular health care bill, but they could not find one day during the last year to write a budget,” said Congressman Price. “Every man, woman, and child in America today has a $43,000 share of the national debt. This mountain of debt will rob our children of the American Dream, yet Democrats refuse to cut spending. Amazingly, they plan to follow President Obama’s lead by pushing legislation that will continue to spend taxpayer dollars at massively bloated levels – inflated by the disastrous bailout and failed stimulus policies pursued by this majority.

“Moreover, the Democrat leadership seems intent on creating another trillion dollar deficit during a Lame Duck session – an act that is irresponsible, arrogant, and indefensible. Americans are fed up with reckless spending, and Democrats clearly know but could not care less. That they are eagerly planning to return later on this year to add billions more to our nation’s debt just shows how out-of-touch this majority has become and how dangerous their policies are for our nation’s fiscal state.

“As usual, conservatives have offered a better, less costly alternative to keep the government running for a full year. We have offered opportunities to take spending levels back to a pre-bailout, pre-stimulus era when Washington was not using an economic crisis to justify a decades-old liberal spending agenda. Nevertheless, Democrats have completely ignored opportunities for fiscal responsibility. There should be no more excuses. Washington needs to accept that the public piggy bank is empty and start cutting spending immediately.”

NOTE: The Republican Study Committee introduced an alternative “continuing resolution,” which would keep the government running for a full year and cut spending to begin rolling back the massive trillion dollar deficits of recent years. Click here to learn more.
