Price Responds to Secretary Geithner

“While President Obama and Company Are Telling the Public What to Believe, Republicans Are Busy Listening to What Americans Have to Say”

Congressman Tom Price (R-GA) issued the following statement in response to an editorial by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner entitled “Welcome to the Recovery” that was published in today’s New York Times.

“Secretary Geithner is trying awfully hard to convince people not to believe their own eyes,” said Congressman Price. “While we all wish the picture was as rosy as he claims, wishing will not make it so. As far as my constituents can tell, one-in-ten Americans are still out of work. Building an economy in which the private sector sees robust job creation is going to take a lot more than campaign speeches and newspaper columns. For starters, Washington needs to clear up the uncertainty about taxes, deficits, and other government-imposed costs that even Mr. Geithner himself admits is holding back investment and growth.

“While the Secretary praises American families for getting off the unsustainable ‘borrow-and-spend path,’ he neglects to mention that Washington continues to speed headlong down the exact same road. People are seriously and rightly concerned about the consequences of a national debt projected to hit $26 trillion by the end of the decade. If Mr. Geithner wants to boost Americans’ confidence in our economic future, he should convince his fellow Democrats to stop spending like there is no tomorrow.

“Throughout the tenure of this administration, conservatives have presented better solutions to put our country on firm footing for tomorrow and the decades to come. While President Obama and company are telling the public what to believe, Republicans are busy listening to what Americans have to say.”
