Americans Show Support for Reforming Fannie and Freddie

Congressman Tom Price (R-GA) issued the following statement on this week’s most popular YouCut proposal, which would save taxpayers an estimated $30 billion by reforming Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. This initiative has received around 45% of the votes cast so far in the latest round of voting. Since YouCut was launched, Americans have cast over 670,000 votes.

“While Americans have one more week to vote for the latest batch of YouCut initiatives, so far the greatest support has gone to a proposal to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac,” said Congressman Price. “These two entities were largely responsible for the mortgage and financial crisis that crippled our economy, and the reward for their recklessness has been the largest bailout of all. Taxpayers have already sunk $145 billion into Fannie and Freddie, and that’s only half of the expected cost. With no bottom in sight to this sinkhole of money, it’s no surprise Americans want to stop Fannie and Freddie’s drain on taxpayers’ wallets.

“Democrats have a storied history of sticking their heads in the sand when it comes to the problems at these two companies, and it looks like the country has had enough. Ending the bailouts and Washington’s unsustainable accumulation of debt should not be a partisan issue. I look forward to House Democrats having yet another chance to stop this bailout and make sensible reforms to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.”
