Line-Item Veto Not Enough to Combat $13 Trillion National Debt

Reports indicate that the Obama administration plans to ask Congress to pass legislation which would require a vote on spending cuts proposed by the President. Congressman Tom Price (R-GA) issued the following statement in response.

“President Obama’s calls for fiscal responsibility always seem to be a day late and a trillion dollars short,” said Congressman Price. “The legislative line-item veto would be a good tool to help eliminate wasteful spending in the future, but deficit spending needs to be reined in today. Just like the President’s Fiscal Commission, this latest proposal does nothing to prevent Democrats from racking up another trillion dollars in debt this year. It’s time to stop kicking the can further down the road. The national debt is about to hit $13 trillion, an astonishing figure. That’s $118,000 in debt for every single American taxpayer, yet Democrats continue to push massive deficits and have no plans to produce a budget for next year. Washington Democrats are clearly out-of-touch with the American people. If President Obama is truly concerned about skyrocketing debt, he should insist that Congress pass a balanced budget now.”
