Price: “Dictating Supply Does Not Generate Demand”
Administration Energy Policies Belie Economic Reality
Congressman Tom Price (R-GA) issued the following statement in response to the Obama administration’s announced plan to impose new mandates for fuel efficiency on vehicles. For the first time ever, these mandates will reportedly apply to medium and heavy duty trucks as well as smaller vehicles.
“Americans can benefit from more fuel efficient vehicles, but not if costly new mandates hit the brakes on economic activity,” said Chairman Price. “Medium and heavy duty vehicles are essential tools for businesses and farms across the country. These employers’ future prospects are already being undermined by the Obama administration’s job-killing agenda, and the higher costs that will result from this latest action are just another nail in the coffin. Dictating supply does not generate demand. Rather than imposing new mandates that could be the final straw, we need to encourage commerce by allowing manufacturers to produce vehicles people actually want to buy.
“Our focus should be on rewards, not penalties. After all, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Creating incentives for better fuel efficiency is the best way to achieve our twin goals of a healthy environment and a healthy economy. Inflexible mandates will simply reduce economic freedom and growth at the same time.”
