Deficits Aren’t a Budget Requirement

Congressman Tom Price (R-GA) issued the following statement in response to the Democrat majority’s inability to produce a budget resolution by the April 15 deadline. Reports indicate that House Democrats may not vote on a budget at all this year. This would be the first time since the modern budget process was adopted in the 1970’s that the House has not passed a budget resolution.

“Rumor has it that Democrats have not produced a budget because doing so would force them to vote for huge new deficits,” said Congressman Price. “How absurd. There is no requirement that the federal government spend America deeper into debt every year. All it takes to produce a balanced budget is serious leadership and a willingness to make tough decisions. Those qualities are lacking among the Democrats running Congress these days. Americans cannot ignore the April 15 tax deadline or their own family budgets without repercussions, and Congress should not ignore its own budget deadline.

“Democrats voted to create the six largest annual deficits in U.S. history last year, with $5.2 trillion in more debt by 2014. I find it astounding that they will vote for a reckless budget last year, but now are all of a sudden skittish. The Democrats’ inability to write a responsible budget demonstrates their inability to govern.

“The Republican Study Committee will once again propose a balanced budget this year because we understand that skyrocketing debt is a problem even in election years. Though not one Democrat supported our balanced budget last year, perhaps their newfound reluctance to defend their deficit spending will spark some inner sense of fiscal sanity.”
