There exists a balance between environmental standards and a respect for jobs that the Environmental Protection Agency has been unable to find. Last June, in a little-noticed regulatory action, the EPA proposed new standards for industrial boilers and process heaters. The standards, known as the boiler MACT proposal, were so strict that President and CEO of the Biomass Power Association Bob Cleaver described them as “unachievable.” A recent study found that the new standards would result in a loss of up to 337,000 jobs and cost more than $5.7 billion in new taxes.

Washington, D.C.– Several leading Members of Congress asked Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Gregory Jaczko to justify his plans to halt the review of the Yucca Mountain, Nev. nuclear waste repository and urged him to move the process ahead. In a letter sent to Jaczko, four ranking Republicans said that by requiring NRC staff to end the review of the Department of Energy’s application to license Yucca Mountain as a waste storage facility, he was single-handedly reversing the wishes of Congress.

Washington, D.C.– The House Science Committee today approved an amendment from Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., that will reinforce the Obama Administration’s responsibility to store spent nuclear waste at the proposed Yucca Mountain, Nev. nuclear waste repository. The Nuclear Energy Research and Development Act of 2010 (H.R. 5866) will update Department of Energy nuclear energy research programs in order to develop new nuclear energy technology.

Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., ranking Republican on the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, issued the following statement on today’s schedule meeting of the House Rules Committee to consider amendments to H.R. 3532, the Consolidated Lane, Energy, and Aquatic Resources (CLEAR) Act: “The disaster in the Gulf of Mexico this summer clearly showed that improvements to offshore drilling practices and regulations are needed. But the CLEAR Act that the House Rules Committee will consider this evening goes much further than needed and will likely lead to higher taxes, lost jobs and higher energy prices. I will submit an amendment to the Rules Committee that will improve this bill’s language on chemical dispersants, and I hope that the Committee approves this and other amendments that will fix this fatally flawed bill.

A Nuclear Regulatory Commission panel reviewing President Barack Obama’s request to permanently shutter Nevada’s Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository recently found something lacking in the administration’s case — merit. The administration’s case for closing Yucca Mountain wasn’t based on valid safety concerns, sound science or funding concerns. It was simply a “matter of policy.”

Washington, D.C. –The House Science and Technology Committee today required NASA to provide more details on how much of its temperature record overlaps with data collected from the University of East Anglia’s (UEA) Climatic Research Unit (CRU), the research body at the center of the ongoing Climategate scandal. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., sponsor of the amendment to NASA authorization legislation (HR 5781), said the measure is needed to ensure the integrity of the agency’s temperature data following the scandal.
