Welcome to the website of the Republican members of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming.

In the United States and around the globe, there's a debate about what effect emissions from cars, factories and power plants are having on the temperature of the Earth. This debate has inspired passion in some, fear in others, and a host of solutions, both good and bad.Global warming is a serious issue, and Republicans on this panel are looking for common-sense solutions that Americans can support. Fortunately, some potential global warming solutions also stand to make the U.S. more energy independent, a goal every American can get behind. The Republicans of this committee believe positive ideas, not fear, is the best way to address global warming and energy independence. While searching for solutions, Republicans will urge Congress to be guided by these principles:

  • First, any climate change policy must protect U.S. jobs and the economy.

  • Second, any solution must focus on technologies from across the energy spectrum, from nuclear to clean coal to renewable energy to improved energy efficiencies.

  • Third, any solution must produce real improvement to the environment. Some proposals would damage the economy without making any significant reductions in greenhouse gases.

  • Finally, it must require global participation, including China and India, whose industrial growth is resulting in a tremendous rise in greenhouse gas emissions from these nations. This year, it is expected that China will surpass the U.S. in greenhouse gas emissions.

Using these principles, Congress can find global warming solutions that benefit not just Americans, but all of the world's people.

Sincerely,

Jim Sensenbrenner

There exists a balance between environmental standards and a respect for jobs that the Environmental Protection Agency has been unable to find.

Last June, in a little-noticed regulatory action, the EPA proposed new standards for industrial boilers and process heaters. The standards, known as the boiler MACT proposal, were so strict that President and CEO of the Biomass Power Association Bob Cleaver described them as “unachievable.” A recent study found that the new standards would result in a loss of up to 337,000 jobs and cost more than $5.7 billion in new taxes.

In a letter sent to Jaczko, four ranking Republicans said that by requiring NRC staff to end the review of the Department of Energy’s application to license Yucca Mountain as a waste storage facility, he was single-handedly reversing the wishes of Congress.

Environmental Regulations Pose Serious Threat to U.S. Economic Health

Sensenbrenner: ‘America needs Congress to focus on creating jobs and economic growth’
9/22/2010

Washington, D.C.– U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., ranking Republican on the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, made the following statement during today’s hearing titled,  “The Global Clean Energy Race:”

“In today’s hearing, I expect a slew of experts to tell us what we already know: if we mandate that electric companies use wind energy, it will drive private investment into the wind sector. Of course it will. What investor wouldn’t want a guaranteed market? If we mandate that everyone drive cars with square tires, we will drive investment there too, but that doesn’t mean we should.

CLEAR Act Amendment Protects Intellectual Property of Chemical Maker

Sensenbrenner: ‘CLEAR Act Will Diminish Ability to Respond to Future Oil Spills’
7/29/2010

Washington, D.C. –U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., ranking Republican on the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, issued the following statement on today’s schedule meeting of the House Rules Committee to consider amendments to H.R. 3532, the Consolidated Lane, Energy, and Aquatic Resources (CLEAR) Act:

“The disaster in the Gulf of Mexico this summer clearly showed that improvements to offshore drilling practices and regulations are needed. But the CLEAR Act that the House Rules Committee will consider this evening goes much further than needed and will likely lead to higher taxes, lost jobs and higher energy prices. I will submit an amendment to the Rules Committee that will improve this bill’s language on chemical dispersants, and I hope that the Committee approves this and other amendments that will fix this fatally flawed bill.

A Nuclear Regulatory Commission panel reviewing President Barack Obama’s request to permanently shutter Nevada’s Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository recently found something lacking in the administration’s case — merit.

The administration’s case for closing Yucca Mountain wasn’t based on valid safety concerns, sound science or funding concerns. It was simply a “matter of policy.”
