Human Rights & Foreign Affairs

Congressman Reichert believes we have a responsibility to promote freedom and democracy throughout the world and protect and defend the oppressed.  He believes there is no greater opportunity to reaffirm the moral courage and integrity of Americans than to lead the global efforts to end genocide and provide safe refuge for those displaced by violence in search of freedom.

For his leadership on efforts to stop the genocide in Darfur, the Genocide Intervention Network gave Congressman Reichert an “A+”.

·         Supported legislation to establish the atrocities in Darfur as genocide and expresses the need for greater U.S. and international involvement.

·         Supported increased funding for humanitarian aid in Darfur to ensure those touched by the violence and forced out of their homes receive adequate supplies of food, water, and shelter.

·         Supported legislation urging the president to appoint a Special Envoy to Sudan.  The bill passed and shortly thereafter President Bush appointed former USAID Administrator Andrew Natsios as the Special Envoy to Sudan.

·         Supported legislation, and sent letters to President Hu Jintao, calling on China to use its unique relationship and economic leverage with the government of Sudan to end the genocide in Darfur.

·         Supported efforts to urge the Arab League to do more to stop the genocide in Darfur.

·         Supports efforts to prohibit federal contracts to multinational businesses if they maintain business relationships and investments with Sudan and other national, regional and local governments involved in genocide.

·         Sent a letter to President Bush to urge the government of Sudan to follow through on all of its agreements, ensuring that relief agencies and workers are protected and have access to the million of Darfurians who depend on international assistance.

·         Recognizes and commends the efforts of the U.S. public and advocacy groups to raise awareness about and help end the worsening humanitarian crisis and genocide in Darfur.

·         Supports legislation to allow more Iraqis and their families who are at risk because they helped us in Iraq to enter the U.S..

·         Supports efforts to provide greater assistance to Iraqis who worked as translators or interpreters for the U.S. in Iraq or Afghanistan.

·         Sent a letter to President Bush expressing concern over the plight of Iraqi refugee and internally displaced persons and urging him to consider an aggressive effort to develop sustainable, long-term strategies to address the displaced population.

·         Supported legislation requesting the government of Japan to issue an apology for the sexual enslavement of the 'comfort women' and educate future generations about this crime against humanity.
