Port Security

Congressman Reichert knows the importance of protecting the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma from terrorist attack. In addition to the potential loss of life, any shutdown in our ports would have a profound impact on our economy, as Washington state is the most trade dependent state in the nation, with one of three jobs tied to trade. Combined, the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma are the third largest port in the nation, only behind L.A./Long Beach and New York/New Jersey.

His accomplishments on port security include:

·         Drafted and passed a port security training amendment and an amendment creating a port security exercise program that were both included in comprehensive port security legislation signed into law in 2006.

·         Consistently supported increased funding for the Port Security Grant program, which provides millions of dollars for security at the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma.

·         Advocated for a new Intermodal Test Center at the Port of Tacoma, to screen for radioactive material transferred directly from ship to rail.
