Melancon Says Lifting the Moratorium on Deepwater Drilling Critical to Louisiana Jobs
October 12, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, in response to Department of Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s announcement that the moratorium on deepwater drilling will be lifted, Congressman Charlie Melancon (LA-03) released the following statement:

“For months now, I have been working to end the job-killing moratorium on offshore drilling” said Rep. Melancon. “I’m glad that Secretary Salazar has finally come to understand that we can drill for oil and gas safely in the Gulf. Our workers need to get back to work on those rigs to provide the jobs and energy security we need. If rigs comply with the regulations that are necessary to keep another BP disaster from ever happening again, they should be allowed to resume work immediately.”

Rep. Melancon Again Presses Administration to End Drilling Moratorium
Also Urges Faster Movement on Shallow Water Permitting
October 4, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Charlie Melancon (LA-03) spoke again with Administration officials and urged them to immediately end the deepwater drilling moratorium in the Gulf of Mexico. In a discussion with Director Michael Bromwich of the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEM), Congressman Melancon emphasized the economic impact the moratorium was having on Louisiana’s workers and small businesses.

“When Director Bromwich held a public forum in Lafayette three weeks ago, I told him the Administration needed to lift the deepwater drilling moratorium immediately, and speed up the approval of shallow water permits,” said Rep. Melancon. “In our conversation today, I emphasized again that the Administration’s moratorium is hurting Louisiana’s workers and small businesses, and we’ve had enough.
