Washington, May 19 - Representative Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) reminded North Carolina farmers today that the deadline for electing to participate in the federal government’s Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) program or the Direct and Counter-cyclical (DCP) program is June 1, 2010.  These important farm safety nets are designed to provide market and price stability that will ensure a stable, safe, and consistent food supply.

“North Carolina farmers and agriculture are the mainstay of our state’s economy,” Etheridge said.  “Our growers and producers need to know about these important deadlines in order to support their work and families.  When farmers succeed, we all benefit.”

Eligible farm operators and land owners have until June 1, 2010, to enroll in the DCP and the ACRE Program for 2010 at their County Farm Service Agency (FSA) offices.  Producers that enrolled in ACRE for the 2009 crop year are automatically enrolled in ACRE for 2010-2012 when they annually sign-up for the Farm Program at County FSA offices.  It is important to keep in mind that USDA will not allow late filing or provide deadline extensions this year.

For more information on the ACRE program or 2010 DCP program sign-up, producers should contact their County FSA Office, or go to the USDA FSA web site at :  www.fsa.usda.gov/FSA
