House Adopts Resolution on Continued Need for Stable Housing for Individuals Living with HIV/AIDS

Washington | May 26, 2010 - Over the past few decades, we have made great strides in our understanding of HIV and AIDS.  Still, up to 70 percent of all people living with HIV report a lifetime experience of homelessness or housing instability.  To combat the spread of and treatment of HIV and AIDS, it is imperative to address the need for stable housing.  For this reason, I signed on as an early cosponsor of H.Con.Res.137, recognizing that the "lack of adequate housing is a barrier to effective HIV prevention, treatment and care, and that the U.S. should make a commitment to providing adequate funding for developing housing as a response to the AIDS pandemic."  I was pleased that earlier this week the House of Representatives unanimously passed this Resolution, which follows the lead of the Delaware State Legislature in their advocacy for the need of housing for patients with HIV/AIDS to ensure they receive adequate treatment and care.  When this Resolution was introduced in the U.S. Congress, Delaware was the only state to have passed legislation on this issue.  Adequate housing options play an important role in helping people living with HIV, and preventing those that do not have if from contracting it.
