Will the government run a health care public option like they do the US and Interstate Highway system, stripping states of funds for federal programs? // Perhaps a better question is, will they run the US and Interstate Highway system like they would the health care public option? Will we be forced to drive on US or Interstate Highways at risk of imprisonment? Congress would force us purchase goods or services (health insurance) regardless of our individual priorities, stripping us of liberty and property for their own agenda. (I thought that's why we became independent from England.)

We need to start cutting the purse strings to Washington. Our State should start learning how to live without money from Washington. We should not be living on the dole from Washington. Money from Washington always comes with strings attached. Virginia should start now to learn to live with in its means, like I have to. If we provided for ourselves, stopped looking to Washington for money, and demanded they stay out of our business, we would be better off and would not be concerned with losing money that really does not belong to us anyway. Money given to Americans from Washington is one way Washington uses to control us and take our Freedoms from us. It is time for this to stop.

From what I have understood to make this even worse of just giving money for an expensive yet fuel efficient sports car in a foreign land and not doing one dad blame thing for our economy is that AL GORE is also an investor in the company. When will we ever quit paying off this crook!!

I respectfully disagree. Congressman Forbes' comments and opinions omit the fact that these are two different budgets. While I agree our transportation system could use numerous repairs, I also agree in funding research and developement of products that will prolong the use of our transportation system , and at a cheaper cost to the consumer. The bill that loaned $529 million to help a Finish company to produce hybrid cars was part of a $25 billion bill, of which domestic companies like Ford and Tesla ,as well as Nissan who has a great domestic interest, received $8 billion. The purpose of the bill, if I read the article correctly, was to develop higher mile per-gallon vehicles, perhaps even as high as 100mpg, which, in turn, reduce the operational costs of our vehicles. Please remember the almost $4 a gallon gas prices last summer. Furthermore, this hybrid technology/lower gas consumption will, in turn, allow us to live in a cleaner environment with fewer cancer and asthma causing contaminates (thereby lowering our national health care costs). It pains me to say that the U.S. does not have a monopoly on the best engineers; therefore, it is logical to invest in a company, in a foreign country, that develops progressive technologies that we may wish to purchase. I think in the context of Forbes' comment, the taxpayer may think that $529 million, a half billion dollars, is a lot of money. However, in comparison, Ford Motor Company spent $1 billion in the mid 1980s to give us the first generation Ford Taurus. We also currently spend $1 billion on each B2 bomber for the purpose of national defense. As an alternate argument, perhaps if we had more fuel-efficient cars, we would be satiated from our domestic oil supplies, thereby showing the practicality of our Finnish investment to develop more technologies that would fiscally benefit the taxpayers. I also see that people are offended that this is going to the developement of an impractical sports car, ignoring the fact that the purpose is for technology developement. Historically, I am reminded that Henry Ford made his first fortune as a race car driver. After perfecting many of the technologies, he then invested in the Ford Motor Comapany that soon thereafter produced the Model T. To the point, I see a need for both budgets, and, in such a lean time, I also see the need to prioritise the budget. But lastly I need to ask, if the Finnish company is recieving a $529 loan, does that not imply that the money will be paid back? Hence if we wait, you may still get the opportunity to fix our roads. As for the discussion of transportation budget, I find your comments to be vague. Granted, we are looking at losing over $500 million in the transportation budget. But I have to ask, to what does that truly amount? In today's world, that just is not a lot of money. In these lean times, I can understand that you want to take money from one budget to suppliment another, but which investment will have the greater, long term impact?
