  Demanding Transparency in Healthcare Reform

Congressman Forbes signed a letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi urging her to make final healthcare reform legislation available for the public at least 14 days prior to any vote in the House of Representatives. The ongoing negotiations for the healthcare bill have not been open to the public, members of the minority party, or the media.

  Limiting the National Debt

Congressman Forbes cosponsored H.R. 4262, which would require a two-thirds vote in both the House of Representatives and Senate to raise the national debt level. Currently, the national debt can be raised automatically in the joint budget resolution without facing a direct vote or by a simple majority. This legislation will make new debt increases more difficult.

Calling for a Freeze in Member of Congress Salaries

Congressman Forbes called for a compensation freeze for Members of Congress. He cosponsored H.R. 4255, which would stop the automatic pay raise for Members of Congress in FY2011.

Budget

Supported the President’s veto of a supplemental spending bill. Congressman Forbes voted to sustain the President’s veto of a short term Department of Defense spending bill, H.J.Res.64. The stopgap spending bill was deemed unnecessary after a more long-term Department of Defense spending bill had since been enacted covering all programs in H.J.Res.64.
This resolution was defeated in support of the veto by a vote of 143-245.

Government Reform

Curbed waste, fraud, and abuse within the federal government. Congressman Forbes supported H.R. 2646, which clarifies and strengthens the authority of the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to audit and provide assessments as to whether the taxpayers are receiving full value from government programs.

Healthcare

Protected access to quality cardiac care for seniors. Congressman Forbes cosponsored H.R. 4371, to avert significant cuts in Medicare payments that would otherwise lead to the closure of private practices across the country.

Funded diabetes research and treatment. Congressman Forbes cosponsored H.R. 3668 to renew the Special Diabetes Program. Since its inception, the program has become a critical part of our nation’s investment in diabetes research, treatment, and prevention efforts.

Defense

Raised concerns about China’s burgeoning naval fleet. During a full House Armed Services Committee hearing, Congressman Forbes questioned the top U.S. military officer in the Pacific, Admiral Robert Willard, on the growth of the Chinese navy that now is larger than the United States. Congressman Forbes asked how our Navy can provide sufficient security for our sea lanes and oceans without a shipbuilding plan while the Chinese continue to accelerate their shipbuilding program. Watch the series of questions here

Supported Navy SEALs who captured a most-wanted figure. Congressman Forbes cosponsored H. Res 977, which honors Navy SEALs Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew McCabe, Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Keefe, and Petty Officer 1st Class Julio Huertas for their heroic actions in the capture of Ahmed Hashim Abed, the mastermind behind of one of the most notorious crimes against Americans in Iraq. The three SEALs have since been charged for actions related to the capture.

Honored Military Spouses. Congressman Forbes cosponsored H.R. 4043, to present an official lapel pin to honor the spouses of service members that have served in a combat zone for more than thirty days. Lapel pins would be distributed to the spouses of all servicemembers who have been deployed since September 11, 2001. Spouses of service members deployed prior to September 11th would also be eligible to apply for the pin.

Judiciary

Called for the Department of Justice (DOJ) to explain voter intimidation decision. During a House Judiciary Committee, Congressman Forbes voted for H. Res. 994, which would have required DOJ to turn over documents relating to their decision to reverse course and drop charges against two men accused of voter harassment in Philadelphia on Election Day in 2008. The two men were accused of intimidating voters by positioning themselves at the entrance to a polling station dressed in paramilitary garb, with one wielding a baton.
This resolution failed in Committee by a vote of 15-14.

Foreign Affairs

Supported human rights and religious freedom in Egypt. Congressman Forbes cosponsored H.Res. 200, calling on the Egyptian government to respect human rights and freedom of religion. Recent reports have indicated that women in Egypt have been kidnapped and forced to marry and convert to Islam.

Financial Services

Supported the James Monroe Commemorative Coin Act.  Congressman Forbes cosponsored H.R. 4329 commemorating the bicentennial of the election of President Monroe.
